About the Equine Herpes Virus Epidemic
What is EHV?
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV), also known as rhinopneumonitis, is a highly contagious class of viruses that can prove fatal to horses. Type 1 (EHV-1) and Type 4 (EHV-4) pose the greatest threat.
EHV-4 causes a non-fatal upper respiratory tract disease in foals and is sometimes associated with abortion and neurological disorders.
The more threatening EHV-1 can lead to neurological disease, respiratory disease, abortion, paralysis, spinal cord inflammation, and often, death.
How is it spread?
EHV is highly contagious and spread directly from horse-to-horse through the respiratory tract in nasal secretions. It is also transmitted to horses from human hands and indirectly through contact with physical objects that are contaminated with the virus, including clothing, equipment and tack, stable areas, trailers, grooming products, feed buckets, and even contaminated air within the vicinity of the horse.
EHV can live for 7 days in a “normal” environment, but can remain alive for as long as 30 days under perfect environmental conditions.
What action can be taken?
Right now, the equestrian world is at a crucial moment. Since it appeared at a show in Valencia, Spain, this outbreak has quickly spread globally and has mutated into a strain that replicates more rapidly and targets neurological tissue. No vaccine exists against this neurological disease.
The only protection for the horses and the businesses and individuals within the equestrian world is quarantine and protection through prevention.

Lucy Duncan
Lucy, internationally respected for her knowledge and experience in business, is a passionate equestrian at heart. She began her love affair with horses at age five and has been privileged and enriched by her years in the saddle and experiences shared with friends who ride, train, and care for horses, many of whom are celebrated riders, judges, and veterinarians. When the EHV-1 outbreak started in Spain in 2021, Lucy realized that she knew a way to help contain it– to quickly implement the same sanitizing protocols as being used to contain the coronavirus pandemic. She immediately went to work, contacting experts in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and in the U.S., to prevent the spread of contagious equine diseases.
Damon Mintz
Damon has an extensive track record of successfully growing public and private businesses in industries including energy, industrial, and health sciences. He has owned and consulted for companies ranging from mid-sized to a multi-billion dollar public company. Most recently, Damon served as President & CEO of a public company, which he grew from $300,000 to $50,000,000 in annual revenue. However, in spite of his business success, Damon’s greatest passion is working on ways to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether through SAFEAGAIN, his youth sports companies, business coaching and consulting organization, or his foundation, serving people is what satisfies Damon the most.
